The advice you find online says clean your gutters once a year, in autumn, after the leaves come down. That advice was not written for the Triangle. Under a mature oak canopy in central Raleigh or the older streets of Durham, a single autumn visit leaves your gutters blocked for a good chunk of the year.
The Triangle drops in stages, not once
Three things fall here, and they do not fall together.
- Pine straw and pollen, heavily through spring. The yellow-green film everyone knows about is also filling gutters and packing down into a mat that water runs straight over.
- Oak catkins and seed, late spring. Small, fibrous and very good at knitting together over a downspout opening.
- Hardwood leaf, from October well into December. Willow oaks and water oaks hold their leaves far later than the maples, which is why a mid-November clean often has to be redone.
Clean once in November and you have dealt with exactly one of those three, and you have done it before the oaks were finished.
The schedule that actually works
Two visits. Late spring, once the pollen and catkins have finished, and again once the hardwoods are genuinely done — which in most of the Triangle means late December rather than Thanksgiving.
If your property sits under heavy canopy, or you have pine directly overhead, a third visit in high summer is worth it. Pine straw does not wait for autumn.
What blocked gutters actually cost
Water that cannot get to a downspout goes over the front edge and down the wall. That does three things, in order of how expensive they are to fix.
- It stains the siding and the fascia, which is cosmetic and cleans off.
- It saturates the ground at the foundation, which is where basement and crawlspace damp starts.
- It sits in the gutter through winter, and standing water plus a hard freeze is how gutters pull away from the fascia board.
The third one is the one that turns a routine clean into a replacement bill.
How we do it
We clear the run by hand rather than blowing debris across your roof and garden, flush every downspout to confirm it is actually running, and check the hangers while we are up there. If a section is pulling away or a seam is starting to leak, you will hear about it while it is still a small job.
Most customers pair it with a house wash, because the ladder is already up and the streaking under the gutter line comes off at the same time.
Towns where this matters most
Anywhere under established canopy: the neighbourhoods inside the Beltline in Raleigh, most of central Durham, and nearly all of Chapel Hill, Carrboro and Hillsborough. Newer developments on open lots in Apex, Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina can often get away with a single well-timed visit — for now. Canopy grows.
